File an FBT return

Modified on Tue, 14 May at 10:37 AM

Introduction

To file an FBT return you currently have two options:

  1. E-file via myIR (recommended); or
  2. Physically send a signed paper form to Inland Revenue.

Unfortunately, Inland Revenue does not currently support e-filing FBT returns outside of myIR, so you cannot e-file them with a simple click as you can for income tax returns.

E-file via myIR

  1. In the entity’s FBT calculation, click the Reports tab > Tax Return.
  2. In the Filing method options, select Online E-FBT.
  3. At the bottom of the return, click Open myIR.

File a paper return

  1. In the entity’s FBT calculation, click the Print arrow in the top right of the screen.
  2. Click IR420 FBT Return, IR421 FBT Return or IR422 FBT Return, as applicable.
  3. Download the PDF return to your computer or send it to your printer.

Locking return periods

Once you've completed the FBT return calculation for each quarter, you can lock the return period in settings or from the return screen to prevent further updates by other users.

From Settings

  1. In the entity’s FBT calculation, click the Settings tab > Settings.
  2. In the Return Calculations section:
    • To lock a return, click the grey Return Lock button.
    • To unlock a return, click the green Return Lock button.

Or from the Tax Return screen

  1. In the entity’s FBT calculation, click the Reports tab > Tax Return.
  2. Click the relevant Quarter tab.
  3. In the Return details section at the top:
    • To lock the return, click the grey Return Lock button.
    • To unlock the return, click the green Return Lock button.
